Moyra Whelan Obituary, Death – We regret to inform you that Moira F. Whelan, age 85, passed away on January 30, 2020, at her home with her family by her side. Moira was born to the late Thomas and Annie May (McLaughlin) Duffy on January 17, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. She wed her high school sweetheart, Luke Whelan (1985), in the Church of St. Joseph in Long Island City, New York, on September 17, 1955. They have five amazing children who were a true blessing.
Moira worked as a bookkeeper and a stay-at-home mom. Moira was a bookkeeper, and while she found her job rewarding, nothing gave her greater joy than looking after her family. She placed a high priority on her family. The presence of Moira’s grandkids and great-grandchildren brought her the greatest delight, and she was always prepared to welcome them with open arms and a warm lap.
Moira was an extremely involved local citizen. She participated in the orchestra at Bishop McDonald High School in Queens, New York, and was a member of the Columbettes. She also taught CCD at the Queens, New York, schools of St. Mel’s and Blessed Sacrament. A devout Catholic, Moira was a dedicated parishioner at both St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls and St. John the Evangelist in Mahopac, New York.
Margaret O’Gara of Granite Springs, NY, Thomas Whelan of Bethel, CT, Sean Whelan of Katonah, NY, Brendan Whelan of Slate Hill, NY, and Dermot Whelan of Albany, NY are Moira’s children who survive her. Her sixteen grandchildren are still alive and well: Colin O’Gara, Kathleen O’Gara, Patrick O’Gara, Kieran Whelan, Luke Whelan, Eamon Whelan, Alison Whelan, Kerri Whelan, Melissa Whelan, Jenna Whelan, Brendan Whelan, Megan Whelan, Ryan Whelan, Caitlyn Whelan, Luke Whelan, Bridget Whelan. Along with six great-grandchildren: Reagan O’Gara, Maeve O’Gara, Joseph O’Gara, Jessica O’Gara, Liam Whelan, and Kennedy O’Gara. All of them gave her indescribable pleasure, and she regarded each one in the highest regard.
In addition to their mother, James Duffy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Thomas Duffy of Bayside, New York, are Moira’s surviving siblings. Luke, Moira’s husband, fell tragically at a young age in 1985. Remembering Moira will keep her spirit alive in the minds and hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her.
