During a ceremony on Tuesday honoring the hundreds of law enforcement personnel who were present at the Capitol on January 6, members of the Sicknick family walked past Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California. Both men are Republicans. Although McConnell extended his hand to Sicknick’s family, they did not acknowledge or respond to his gesture. After the event, they gave an interview to NBC News in which they claimed that it was not a mistake not to take the chance to shake hands with the leaders of the Republican Party. Gladys Sicknick, the mother of the fallen cop, told NBC News that the family had discussed the matter and decided that they would not shake the suspects’ hands.
She issued a challenge to Republican members of Congress who continue to back the former president, saying that they should “go down to Mar-a-Lago and you know, kiss his ring or whatever the hell they do down there, you know.” She had a meeting with Republican members the previous year, during which she requested that they vote in favor of the establishment of a nonpartisan and impartial commission to investigate the attack on the Capitol. Both McConnell and McCarthy held the view that the commission should be abolished.
